In the olden days the only two forms of teeth whitening that existed were a dental procedure and ‘do at home’ methods using some natural products which we use in our day to day life.

Teeth whitening done by using natural products are indeed far cheaper than a visit to a dentist, but have some adverse side effects as well if not carried out safely.

Let us look at some of the popular DIY methods that are doing the rounds of the internet and their potential adverse effects on your teeth and gums.

The Baking Soda way: Using a mixture of baking soda and hydrogen peroxide, two primary ingredients namely found in the kitchen shelves and a first-aid kit, is a very old method of teeth whitening. The baking soda is mixed with your regular fluoride and used for brushing the teeth followed by a peroxide rinse.

Pros: The results are not seen immediately after the first use like commercial products. But persistent usage can help your teeth get whiter after a few weeks.

Cons: However this procedure of natural teeth whitening has its own share of cons. The baking soda and fluoride mixture if left for a long time may rupture the enamel of the teeth and if hydrogen peroxide is ingested while swishing it in your mouth it may tend to burn your food pipe and in some cases turn out to be fatal. This procedure requires a certain amount of expertise. Also, one should never use more than 3% strength Hydrogen Peroxide that has been approved for oral usage. Anything stronger can cause severe side effects.

The Crunchy Fruit Method: Using a mixture of citric fruits like strawberries or lemons for brushing your teeth is another natural way of teeth whitening.

Pros: The acidic content of these citrus fruits helps in bleaching the teeth and removal of stains.

Cons: But the acidic content if high may harm the enamel of your teeth by decreasing its calcium content and causing enamel erosion. It also causes high sensitivity and causes irritation in the gums.

Other popular methods: Similarly there are many other methods of Home teeth whitening like the usage of wood ash, brushing with crushed activated charcoal and many more.

However all the natural home methods for teeth whitening come along with certain side effects as everyone are not aware of the correct usage and these methods are also not evaluated clinically.

Many companies have started making teeth whitening products derived from biological sources which rule out all the chances of side effects.

The products are mostly non peroxide products and many natural ingredients like pomegranate seeds, chamomile flower extracts, meswak, fibres etc are used in the making of these products.

They are also evaluated and approved by the FDA. This makes Natural teeth whitening products potentially safe to use with zero side effects and the results are also seen faster as is better than any peroxide based product.
